M Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson (1808–1875), the 17th President (1865–1869), assumed office after Lincoln’s assassination. He presided over the early Reconstruction era, attempting to quickly reunite the nation with lenient policies towards the South, which put him at odds with the Radical republicans in Congress. His struggles led to him becoming the first American president to be impeached (he was acquitted in the Senate by one vote).

Interesting anecdote: Johnson began his career as a tailor and never lost his touch for the trade. In fact, he would brag that even as President he only wore suits he made himself. His humble origins as a tailor who educated himself exemplify his image as a self-made man.
