Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to reach India by sea, arriving in Calicut in 1498 after rounding the Cape of Good Hope. His success established a maritime route from Europe to Asia and helped usher in a new era of global trade dominated by Portuguese naval power.
